Full Description

{1} The market cross is not shown on the 1587 map, which does show other crosses within the town, and so it is possible that the cross shaft had already been removed by that date. Although called a market cross it is described by Bridges in 1719 as simply a set of round stone steps. At that time it had a lockup beneath it, presumably similar to that which still survives beneath the cross at Geddington. It stood near the church gate but was removed circa 1790, being replaced by a smaller cross which in turn was destroyed in 1808.

{2} The market cross at Kettering stood on the square near the churchyard entrance. The original cross, with a dungeon beneath it was replaced by a smaller cross - without a dungeon - about 1790. The small cross was destroyed about 1808.
(The churchyard mentioned must be that of St Peters and St Pauls and the cross siting therefore, approximately SP 866784).

{4} Medieval marker cross in Kettering. The old cross was replaced in 1790 by a smaller one.

{5} The cross stood at SP 86687845.
