Full Description

{1} There may be an enclosure here, formed by a bank and ditch, against the escarpment above a floodplain. However the ditch has been used by a succession of trackways. The upper part of the enclosed space is divided from the remainder by a bank, ditch and counterscarp bank, much reduced by ploughing. This subsidiary enclosure is no more than 33 metres wide internally, yet upwards of 150 metres long. The eastern end is destroyed by quarrying, which also encroaches at two points on the north perimeter. This upper area might indicate a higher status division of the larger enclosure. Reference is made to foundations within the eastern quarry area, notified to the SMR 5th April 1994, and published in Northamptonshire Archaeology, Volume 25, p188. Several suggestions as to its possible origins are made in a report with accompanying sketchplan.
