Full Description

{2} Building recording was undertaken of a pair of cottages prior to refurbishment and extension. A potting shed and privy to the rear was also recorded. This pair of lowly cottages, probably tenanted by the lower echelons of society, are a rare survival; perhaps unique in Woodnewton. No other examples have been found in the village. Their origins are unclear and no documentary link has been possible with the buildings on the Main Street frontage. They stand as a reminder of the rural poverty and difficult living conditions, which are documented as having beset the area in the 19th centry. Their permanent occupation came to an end in April 1945 when they became a haven for local school children.

{3} The cottages were built separately, probably in the 19th century, but desk-based assessment and building recording has not established a more exact construction date. The cottages provided only the most basic accommodation, without any services, gas electricity or water, and in their final use they were joined together. The roof, the majority of the woodwork and the fittings derive from this last period. No demonstrably early fittings survived.
