Full Description

{1}Stocks in village of Eydon SP 5450; at SP 54215003; photo; {2} NCC guardianship;

{3} "Clerke may not have seen the school finished in his lifetime but he certainly saw a new set of stocks arrive in Eydon, for they were set up the Green in 1828 at a cost of £6 15s. 6d. They are made to accommodate two persons side by side, and on the tall end are bracelets to hold a person standing facing the post, ready to be whipped. They have been repaired twice, but they are still there today, I'm glad to say… Mark Kench remembers her father saying the last man to be put in our stocks was put there for beating his wife. That would probably be in the 1850s, for my father came in 1866, and if it had been in his time I'm sure I would have heard all about it."

{5} Stocks. Early C19. To accommodate two persons. At one end is whipping post with iron bracelets. Noted by S.J. Tyrell as having been set up in 1828. (S.J. Tyrell: A Countryman's Tale, 1973, p.88).

{7} Condition survey drawing

{9} Undated photo.

{10} At SP 54215003. The stocks, for brace malefactors, are metal bound and the western side member is equipped with hand gyves. The whole, in good condition, appears original and in situ. See photograph. Surveyed on 1:2500. Antiquity Model.
