Monument record 244 - Eydon

Summary

Shrunken Medieval settlement. Earthworks of settlement remains include possible house sites, now destroyed by redevelopment. This suggests that the current back lane was formerly a second main street and that the village originally had a planned rectangular layout.

Full Description

{1} Eydon was enclosed in 1761. No map survives. The Award was enrolled in 1762 (NRO Enclosure Enrolment Vol. A, 409). There had previously been 140 acres of enclosure around the manor house (NRO Braye of Stanford Catalogue 563). The settlement has been mapped from the OS first edition 1:10560 scale map. A single polygon has been included to identify the extent of the park but no internal features, other than the buildings, are mapped.

{2} Eydon has an unusual plan, based on two almost parallel streets orientated roughly north-south with the church in a rather isolated postiion to the south. It now appears to be a single street village with a back lane but earthworks suggest that there were once dwellings on both sides of both streets and that the apparent back lane was once of similar importance to the present main street. This indicates the village may have been deliberately planned with this layout.

{5} Painting of part of village dated August 1837, layout of house, note of burial of soldier who died at Battle of Edge Hill;
