Summary

Wellhead at SP 506 362 (Formerly listed as Spring). Astrop Spa was important regional spa, Astrop well was built following the divertion of the road through Astrop Park in 1867. Consent was given for this diversion providing that a facsimile of St Raumbalds well was placed by the new road- side and that water should be conveyed there by pipes. The well comprises a stone lined basin fed by a pipe projecting from the wall that forms the east side of the basin. The well head is in the form of a round headed alcove set into a block of masonry with pilasters on either side of a projecting cornice. The well is of limestone ashlar.

Full Description

{1} Wellhead. C19. Limestone ashlar. Arched niche with moulded keystone surround framed by plain pilasters and straight moulded entablature. A replica of St. Rumbalds well in Astrop Park made when the route of the road which formerly ran through Astrop Park was changed in C19.

{3} Architectual survey with photographs as well as an historal documentation; Astrop Well is later than St. Rumbald's Well and is around 300m away; built around 1866 and erected to orders of Sir William Richard Brown as part of an agreement to close off footpath across Wells Close which local inhabitants used to get water from St. Rumbald's well.

{7} C18th masonry surround to spring; disused;

{8} Two wells; one for the spa and the other a reconstruction of 1866 well on the site of an original (or possibly two contemporary wells).

{10} Water is piped to the replica wellhead from the original spring.

{11} Undated photo, also photo dated1956 and one dated January 1966;

{12} The masonry surround of this spring is of similar design and construction to that of St Rumbald's Well (SP 53 NW 15) and is 18c. See photograph. The water is unfit and the spring disused.
