Summary

House. Early C19, incorporating C17 remains. Squared coursed limestone and ashlar, tile and slate roof, brick and stone stacks. On site of mansion of the Pargetter family, remodelled 1721 for Charles Howe. Burnt down 1793. Rear wing of present house is said to incorporate remains of service wing of former house.

Full Description

{1} House. Early C19, incorporating C17 remains. Squared coursed limestone and ashlar, tile and slate roof, brick and stone stacks. L-plan, double depth. 2 storeys and attic. 3 bay south front has central doorway, with panelled wooden pilasters, semi-circular pediment on brackets and C20 glazed door. Windows with segmental heads and C20 metal casements. Wing projects from right side at rear, C17, 2 storeys casement windows with wood lintels. Interior: Sash windows, and open fireplace in rear room, ground floor. Early C19 inglenook fireplace in front room, fitted with seats, flanking cupboards and bacon cupboard under lintel. Surrounded with wooden pilasters and moulded entablature. Re-used C17 panelling. On site of mansion of the Pargetter family, remodelled 1721 for Charles Howe. Burnt down 1793. Rear wing of present house is said to incorporate remains of service wing of former house. (Information P.F. Towers-Clark). {3} The 18th-century manor was of two and a half storeys and five bays wide and probably built of the local dark ironstone.
