Full Description
{1} House, now a school. Dated 1665, and remodelled in the mid C18th. There are alterations and additions of 1841 and 1900. Built of coursed squared ironstone, with a slate roof, and stone end-stacks. A three-unit plan, of two storeys and an attic. A five-window range. There is a central part-glazed door with stone lintel and keyblock flanked by Doric columns supporting a section of entablature and open pediment. The stonework is all painted. There are twelve-pane sash windows to the ground and first floors with stone lintels and keyblocks (painted), except for a two-storey canted bay window to left with similar windows. Chamfered plinth, painted stone storey-band, quoins, moulded wood eaves and stone-coped gables with kneelers. Kneeler to left is inscribed 1841, that to right 1900. A datestone in the left gable is inscribed 1665. C20th extensions to the rear are not of special architectural interest. The interior was much altered in the C19th.
{3} Observations follow those as in the listed building description, but the west wing (c.1900) is of the Lethaby/Voysey tradition. Internally much of the C19th modelling survives (the staircase in particular) of which, on the landing above, are unusual curved ceiling and roof braces (Slides 4 & 5). The kitchen window is probably of C17th date. Glass is probably crown-type and bullions (from centre of crown glass table) were used in the panes. Two windows were of the side hung casement type (two opening either side of one fixed). The outbuildings contained a converted dovecote with elements of roof structure intact, and converted stables. An iron window to stable block on first floor is of note (Slide 8).
