Full Description

{1} Manor house site SP 76325300. Described by Bridges in the 1720s as an Elizabethan building with the date 1580 on it. The manor is depicted on a plan of 1766 as a long straight range with multiple chimneys. By 1791 a plan of the estate (at Courteenhall) shown the addition of an 'L' shaped E wing in 18th century style. The manor was demolished entirely in 1791 when the extant Courteenhall house [SP 75 SE 18] was erected. The site is marked by a N facing scarp and, to the S, a linear bank possibly the remains of a tree avenue depicted on the 1766 plan [RCHM survey].

{5} Analysis of surviving historic plans suggest that the southern face of the house was between 40m and 60m long and c20m wide on its eastern side, comprising a large main rectangular building and a small annexe to the west. Possibly complicated phasing. Site survey identified a large apparent platform in this area with levelling apparent on its northern side.
