Summary

Deserted settlement within Courteenhall Park. The settlement was recorded in Domesday and the Lay Subsidy of 1334. It is thought that desertion was probably caused by 17th century enclosure and late 18th century emparkment. The settlement is visible as earthworks to the northeast of the church.

Full Description

{1} Most of the houses were destroyed in the late C17th emparking.

{2} Some desertion occurred following enclosure in the mid C17th.

{3} By 1794 no more than six houses remained in the village.

{4} By 1839 only five houses remained in the village.

{5} Deserted village of Courteenhall (SP 762530) first mentioned in Domesday 1086 when it was divided between two manors (total population 15). An average sum (44s 2d) paid in Lay Subsidy 1334. In 1524 17 tax payers are recorded. Mid C17th enclosure of common fields may have caused the desertion of some houses around the church recorded by Bridges. In 1673 43 householders paid Hearth Tax. A plan of 1766 shows the village to have been composed of three parts; a row of buildings E of the church, the main part of the village W of the church and the manor house [SP 75 SE 29] between them. Soon after (and before 1791) the E part of the village was removed and the area levelled to form a park. By 1794 6 houses or farms remained in the E part of the village. By 1839 one of these had been removed. The only extant earthworks of the village are immediately NE of the church on the site of a farm extant in 1766.

{6} The manor house was destroyed in 1791.

{7} It is first described in 1086 Domesday as having two manors.

{9} Village of three parts, with a manor house built in 1580 and a late C17th school. A large sub-rectangular pond which is shown on recent OS maps is also shown on the 1766 map.
