Summary

Baptist chapel in College Street built in 1863 by William Hull, replaced a chapel of 1714 on the same site. Neo-classical ashlar front with impressive Corinthian portico. 2 storeys, rusticated ground floor with pilasters. 3 doorways. 1st floor giant Corinthian order with angle pilasters, central pedimented portico on 6 columns, inner pair single, outer double. 5 stone mullion 3 light windows with panelled aprons, cornices at lintel level under arched panels with keystones.

Full Description

{1} 1863 by William Hall. Neo-classical ashlar front with impressinve Corinthian portico. 2 storeys, rusticated ground floor with pilasters. 3 doorways. 1st floor giant Corinthian order with angle pilasters, central pedimented portico on 6 columns, inner pair single, outer double. 5 stone mullion 3 light windows with panelled aprons, cornices at lintel level under arched panels with keystones. Parapet. Coursed rubble side walls with buttresses between 7 windows with glazing bars, on ground floor with flat arches, on first floor round arches.

{2} Built 1863 by William Hall; neoclassical ashlar front; 2 storeys.

{5} Present building designed by William Hull; erected 1863; rubble walls & ashlar front; Classical façade with Corinthian columns.

{6} The church formed in 1697 erected the first meeting-house on this site in 1714; this had stone walls and two tiers of windows in three bays with two intermediate doorways, it was twice enlarged during the notable pastorate of John Collet Ryland (1759-85).

{10} Three photos, one dated 1992, two undated but probably same date.

{11} The builder was Richard Dunkley of Blisworth.
