Full Description

{1} 'Here was formerly the Norman chapel moved stone by stone to the present village in 1851.'

{2} [SP 7843 4893] Within the area of Hartwell deserted village [SP 74 NE 11] at Chapel Farm the fragmentary foundations of the chapel which gives the farm its name survive in the SE corner of the farmyard. It was of late C12th date and part of an arcade of that period is incorporated in the existing parish church at Hartwell Green built in 1851. Bridges described the chapel in 1720 as consisting of a nave and chancel with a N aisle, and later alterations were noted by Baker.
