Summary

Built in 1688. Three, formerly six almshouses founded by Edmund Sawyer, London Merchant and Lord of the Manor. Coursed rubble, stone slate roof with stone coped side elevation gables.

Full Description

{1} 1688. 3, formerly 6 almshouses founded by Edmund Sawyer, London Merchant and Lord of the Manor. Coursed rubble, stone slate roof with stone coped side elevation gables. 2 storeys, formerly 2 storeys and attics with 6 dormers in steeply pitched thatched roof. 6 casement windows, ground floor double lights and stone mullions under dripmoulds. 4 stone chimneystacks with moulded bands. 1st floor glazing bars, ground floor lattice.

{4} Sawyers Almshouses, of 1688, very humble opposite the budding Civic Centre.

{5} Two photos dated 14.02.1991;

{6} Hospital or almshouse for 6 poor people was erected in 1688. The block consists of 6 dwellings with as many doorways and mullioned windows on the ground floor. It is constructed of ironstone rubble and the roof is covered with stone slates. Panel inscribed 'This hospital was built by Edmand Sawyer Esq AD 1688' Film 2, photo 9.

{7} A new, fairly modest almshouse, sometimes described as the ‘hospital’ was erected in 1688 by Edmund Sawyer for six poor people. Though much altered this building survives today.
