Summary

1-4 Well Lane is a row of cottages at the south end of Market Hill with its junction with Well Lane. 1 Well Lane is structually distinct from and probably earlier than, Nos 2-4. A date stone in the south gable of the added rear range suggests that it was built before 1861, though on stylisitic grounds it is no earlier than cica 1850. The two bay north front to Market Hill has rusticated lintels and stone sills; the roof incorporates a band of fish-scale slates. The rear range was added, presumably in 1861. It was originally divided by a stack wall, into a domestic section and what appears to be a warehouse for the boot and shoe trade.2-4 Well Lane were built in a single phase, probably not long after No.1, which they resemble in the detailing of thier fronts.1-4 Well Lane are listed grade II as a group.
