Summary

Founded in 1611, a building of two storeys and an E-shaped plan. The long wing and north end shorter wing are original, the rest was added in 1830.

Full Description

{1} Founded 1611. A building of 2 storeys in coursed rubble of E shaped plan with stone slate roofs, flat verges on the gables with a finial on each apex. The long wing is parallel to the road, the 3 shorter wings gable end to it. The long wing and the north end shorter wing appear to be in nearly original condition. The rest were added or rebuilt in 1830. (date over 1 of the new doorways), likewise the walls with elaborate gateways linking the road end gables. All windows are stone mullioned, generally of 3 lights to the ground floor and of 2 lights to the 1st floors. Stone chimneys with double, triple and quadruple flues. All the listed buildings on the east side of North Street form a group.{3}Latham's Hospital
Founded by Rev Nichoals Latham, rector of Barnwell St Andrew in 1616, was located in North Street. Linked to the school, but also provided maintenance for 18 poor women. Inmates of the hospital were the warden, sub warden, 12 corporation women, 2 nurses and 2 firewomen. Restorations in 1837 and 1912. (1)

Notice on front of the building for a new almsperson. 'Widows and spinsters of good character of not less than 50 years of age who have been resident in Oundle or Ashton for the last five years or for not less than 7 out of the last 10 years are eligible for appointment' Film 4, photo 3,4.

{5} Latham's Hospital, Oundle, was founded in 1611. The north court is original, the south court a continuation of 1837 in the same Jacobean style with mullioned windows and gables.
