Summary

An early 17th century house that was restored during the 20th century located on the southern side of West Street. The house is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a double pitch Welsh slate roof with protruding ashlar parapets and dressed gable chimney stacks. The north facing street front has a three window range of stone mullioned windows with three lights to the left and right and a two light above a central door. The central door has a moulded stone surround with a four-centred arch head and is flanked by three light stone mullioned windows. Wall painting in ground floor room

Full Description

{1} House. Early C17 restored C20. Squared coursed limestone with Welsh-slate roof. Originally 2-unit plan. 2 storeys. 3-window range of 2- and 3-light, ovolo-moulded stone-mullion, windows with hood moulds and leaded lights. Central doorway, now window, has moulded stone surround with 4-centred arch-head. 2 C20 roof windows. Ashlar gable parapets and ashlar end stacks. C20 entrance to rear. Rear wing remodelled C20. Interior: room to left of entrance noted as having C17 fireplace with 4-centred arc -head, reset from first floor. Room to right of entrance has open fireplace with stop-chamfered bressumer. Panel above bressumer has partially legible black lettering recording 2 religious verses.

[HER note: The inscription is taken from a 16th century book 'Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry' by Thomas Tusser and comprises two proverbs the titles of which are 'Posies for the Parlour' and 'Posies for the Guests Chamber']
