Building record 3088/2/2 - Calcining Kiln, First World War

Calcining kiln of of circular plan, 10m in diameter and 21m high. Built in 1915 it has a large mass concrete base and red brick upper stage with remains of concrete coping. There are eight openings, with semi-circular heads, at the base of the brickwork. The interior is partially lined with firebricks but the kiln was never used and abandoned by 1921.

{1} Kiln said have been used for iron ore smelting. Early C20th. Brick and mass concrete. Circular plan. Large mass concrete base with brick upper stage. 8 openings, with semi-circular heads, at base of brickwork. Said to have been constructed during the First World War. Forms group with Kiln at OS 9472 9966 (q.v.) and Kiln bases at OS 9474 9966 (q.v.) and OS 9476 9966 (q.v.).

{3} Fieldwalking identified modern lime kilns. D.Hall.

{4} Cylinidrical calcining kilns of about 10m diameter, the two completed kilns are about 21m high. The lower parts are of concrete, the upper parts of red brick perforated by arches. Only the concrete bases of the other two kilns were completed. The kilns were never used. Photo.
