Summary

Incomplete calcining kiln of circular plan, 10m in diameter. Started in 1915 it is a large mass concrete base only. The site was abandoned by 1921.

Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking by D.Hall has identified modern lime kilns.

{2} Kiln base. Early C20th. Mass concrete. Circular plan. Large mass concrete base. Said to have been constructed for iron ore smelting during the First World War, but not completed. Forms group with Kiln Base at OS 9476 9966 (q.v.) and kilns at OS 9473 9966 (q.v.) and OS 9472 9966 (q.v.).

{4} Cylindrical calcining kilns of about 10m diameter, the two completed kilns are about 21m high. The lower parts are of concrete, the upper parts of red brisk perforated by arches. Only the concrete bases of the other two kilns were completed. The kilns were never used.
