Building record 3088/2/4 - Base of Uncompleted Kiln, First World War

Incomplete calcining kiln of circular plan, 10m in diameter. Started in 1915 it is a large mass concrete base only. The site was abandoned by 1921.

{1} Kiln base. Early C20. Mass concrete. Circular plan. Large mass concrete base. Said to have been constructed for iron ore smelting during the First World War, but not completed. Forms group with Kiln base at OS 9474 9966 (q.v.) and Kilns at OS 9473 9966 (q.v.) and OS 9472 9966 (q.v.).

{3} Fieldwalking by D.Hall identified modern lime kilns.

{4} Cylindrical calcining kilns of about 10m diameter, the two completed kilns are about 21m high. The lower parts are of concrete, the upper parts of red brick perforated by arches. Only the concrete bases of the other two kilns were completed. The kilns were never used.

{5} Site 407. Remains of four calcining kilns built during WWI but never used. Cylindrical calcining kilns of about 10m diameter, only the concrete bases of two kilns were completed. Photo.
