Full Description
{1} Kitchen garden walls and attached summer house. Probably late C16 walls and mid C19 summer house for the Seventh Earl of Cardigan. Red brick walls with burnt headers. Limestone ashlar summer house. The walls, which have a battered brick and soldier course coping, enclose an irregular triangular area which is subdivided internally into 4 separate areas by similar walls. Each area is linked by an arched opening in the walls. Sections of wall have been rebuilt, probably during the C19 and early C20. The summer house, attached to the west end of the kitchen garden walls, is an octagonal, castellated turret of 2 storeys. The south-east and west facing elevations have 2-light mullion windows, with arch-head lights. Similar doorway at ground floor. Flat roof probably of lead. An octagonal castellated stair turret is attached to the rear. The garden layout is shown on C17 and C18 estate maps. A further wall, to the south, was removed to form a bowling green. The Third Earl of Cardigan consulted Van de Meulen about the layout of the gardens in early C18. (The gardens of Deene Park are included at Grade II in the HBMCE County Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England; Northamptonshire Records Office; Cartographical Collection, Deene Park, Guide Book)
