Summary

The earliest part of the mill is an L-shaped block of two storeys that was probably built in the 17th century. The mill was extended to the north and south in the early 19th century and an additional storey was added to the original block. Built of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof. The buildiong is now in use as an office.

Full Description

{1} Watermill now offices. Datestones NI MI/TI.1664/SE/John St/1724 and 1793.TS. For Thomas Soden, extended early C19. Squared coursed limestone and red brick with Collyweston slate roof. Irregular L-shape plan. 2 and 3storeys. Elevation to road of 3 bays. Bay to left is gable end with leaded casement to first floor, under wood lintel, and similar casement to second floor, under gauged stone head with keyblock. Centre bay breaks forward, with gable end abutting the road. Leaded casements to first nd second floors of gable end, are under wood lintels. Mansard roof with timber framed panel in gable end. Bay to right was the wheel-house. River passes through semi-circular arch. Hipped roof. Reset datestone 1664. The centre bay and wheel house were probably added early C19. Right hand elevation of the wheel-house has 2 leaded casements. Gable at abuttment of wheel-house with main range is tile hung. Elevation to left is a 2-window range of 2-light stone mullion windows, at first floor. Garage doors at ground floor; part of wall is brickwork. Plank door under wood lintel. Range to left has a lower eaves level with 3 Lincolnshire eaves dormers. 2 plank doors under wood lintels. Rear elevation, abutting the river, has some stone mullion windows. Interior not inspected but noted as having no machinery remaining.

{7} Once the location for an experiment in textiles. Stone building, former cornmill, with stone-slated mansard roof. An arch carries a two storey projection over the wheel race. Dates of 1614 and 1729 are recorded in stone in one wall. The mill was disused by 1922 and is now used for offices.

1664 Mill built
1724 Stone panel on the wheelhouse inscribed NI MI/TI 1664/SE/JohnSt/1724 may indicate the building of the wheelhouse at this time.
1789 Robert Young of Duddington insured the water corn mill, outhouses and two stables adjoining, all stone and slate, for £600.
1793 Stone panel on building inscribed 1793 TS thought to stand for Thomas Sowden who was miller at the time. RCHM suggested this indicated heightening of the building although Robert Young was the owner at the time.
Early 19th century Extended on the east, and by a west range with mansard roof, and a wheelhouse with hipped roof.
1853 Mill advertised to be let. Particulars from Mr Walton, Fineshade Abbey
1890 Not listed in trade directories after this date.
1922 Described as disused
1984 By this time the mill was being used as an office
