Summary

The site of a 14th century market cross located 10 metres north west of Cross Farmhouse on a roundabout at the junction of Gretton/ Wakerley Road and Deene Road. The cross is thought to be in or near its original position. The cross is set on a square plinth with chamfered corners with five steps up to the shaft. The socket stone is supported on the base and its upper corners are chamfered to form an octagon. The shaft is comprised of eight clustered columns of alternating girths in a square arrangement. The original cross head does not survive and was replaced by a moulded capital with square abacus and reticulated head when the cross was restored in 1837. The monument may be associated with a grant of 1387 to William la Zouche for an annual fair and Tuesday market. The full height of the cross is approximately 4.5 metres. It is Scheduled and Listed Grade.
