Full Description

{1} Shown as Ashton Green Farm on Ordnance Survey map. Farmhouse. Mid C18 and C19. Squared coursed limestone and yellow brickwork with Collyweston slate roofs. Originally 2-unit plan. 2 storeys with attic. Main front is a 3-window range of C19 casements under wood lintels, the centre window at first floor is blocked. Central, late C19, ashlar porch has hipped roof and panelled door, 2 hipped eaves dormers. Ashlar gable parapets and kneelers and ashlar stacks at ends. Single bay attached to right, s similar, with a lower eaves level. Early/mid C19 one-bay extension attached to right has larger C19 casement window under wood lintels. Mid and late C19 extension to rear: part is yellow brickwork. Interior: room to left of entrance has remains of open fireplace with bressumer.

{3} Two storeys with attics, parapeted gables, red brick stacks, class 6b with a lower, probably slightly later, extension at the northern end, built c.1800. Inside, the cross partitions are timber-framed.

{4} The farmhouse is shown on the 1810 Inclosure Map for Ashton and was extended in the 19th century. The addition of the rear wing and porch represent the late 19th century gentrification of the house. The new entrance faces the garden and away from the farmyard, as was typical of the period. In its interior it has classicising features in the drawing room and sitting room, in the form of plaster cornices and beams and ornate fireplaces, as well as the spacious entrance hall with stairs.

The farmstead has a loose courtyard plan that evolved in phases, rather than being a single planned layout. The farmhouse and attached cart shed forms the west side of the yard. On the south side of the yard is the long stable range, and on the east side, directly opposite the house, is an early 19th century barn. The farmyard entrance is on the north side where, opposite the cart shed, is Shepherdess Cottage and an attached barn.
