Summary

This site includes a house that is situated on the northern side of Main Street. The building was constructed of coursed limestone and ashlar with a double pitched slate roof with end and ridge stacks. The building is L-shaped in plan with casement windows and ashlar gable coping. The house was constructed during the early 17th century and an oval plaque is located above the door with the inscription C/RM/1698.

Full Description

{1} House. Probably early C17 origins with datestone C/RM/1698. Squared coursed limestone with coursed ashlar façade and Colleyweston and Welsh slate roofs. L-shape plan. 2 storeys with attic. Main front is a 5-window range of wooden cross windows with leaded lights under wood lintels. The windows to the far right are of 3 lights. A similar window has been inserted in place of the two windows to ground floor left. Central plank door has 4-centred arch head with moulded stone surrounds. The strap hinges have a central secondary hinge. Oval plaque, with date, above door. Ashlar gable parapets and ashlar ridge and end stacks, with moulded cornices. Left gable has single-light staircase window with ovolo-moulded surround. Rear elevation has irregularly spaced leaded cross windows. Rear wing is probably early C17 with leaded casements under wood lintels. Single-storey bay to far right of this range has a C17 doorway with 4-centred arch head and chamfered stone surround. Interior: open fireplaces with bressumers in hall, kitchen to left of hall and room at end of rear wing. Chamfered spine beams and exposed stud wall in hall. Winder stair, to attic, alongside kitchen fireplace has plank door with wooden latch. Space between hall and kitchen way have housed original main stair. Attic has plaster floor.
