Full Description

{1} Country house. C17 origins, mainly late C17/early C18 with minor C19 and early C20 alterations and additions. Squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and Collyweston and Welsh slate roofs. Double-depth plan. 2 storeys with basement and attic. Entrance front is of 5-window range. C18 door, now part-glazed, has gauged stone head with stepped keyblock and flight of steps. Sash windows with gauged stone heads and stepped keyblocks. Projecting plinth and raised string course between floors. Usticated ashlar quoins. Moulded cornice incorporates heads of keyblocks to first floor windows. Gabled roof, with central well, has ashlar gable parapets and kneelers and rebuilt ashlar stacks at ends. 3 flat-topped roof dormers with casement windows. Garden front to rear of entrance front has 5-window range of similar sash windows under plain stone lintels with keyblocks. Large central arch-head staircase window. Two C17 three-light stone mullion windows to basement. Plinth, string course a d cornice are similar to the entrance front. Late C19, one-unit, single-storey extensions to left and right with Welsh slate roofs. Interior: outer hall and room to left have fielded panelled dados. Staircase replaced early C20 following a fire. Room to left of entrance has fireplace, probably early C18, of local Raunds marble. Fireplace in room to rear is similar, now painted, with panelled decoration and reeded keyblock. Kitchen to right of entrance has fragments of fielded panelling. Centr l first floor room has full-height C17 panelling with frieze decorated with scrolls. Marble fireplace similar to ground floor. Bathroom to right also has similar fireplace with early C19 cast iron basket. Understairs cupboard has fragments of early C18 panelling. Basement, originally domestic offices, has open fireplace with large stone sink. Fireplace surrounds are similar to example at No.13 (Manor House), Church Street, Ringstead (q.v.).

{4} C18th house with earlier origins. A noble house in a prominent position overlooking the Nene Valley. Some structural failings and a maintenance backlog put the building at risk. Schedule of repair is in preparation.
