Summary
A commemorative monument constructed on top of a circular, turfed, earth mound surrounded by a ditch which is partially filled with water. It comprises a stone obelisk, square in section and tapering at the top to form a point.This stands a pedestal built upon two steps, the lower of which has iron railings around the edge. These steps are built on a "basement" section of "Rockwork" formed of stone blocks laid to give a rugged narural appearance. The obelisk was erected by John and Mary Frances Fitzgerald in 1823 and bears a slate tablet commemorating the battle of Naseby. The iron railings were added after 1830.

Full Description
{1} Monument. C.1823. Erected by John and Mary Fitzgerald. Granite obelisk on plinth with decorative band of canon balls. Surrounded by railings all on plinth of coursed granite bocks. Slate tablet below obelisk has long inscription commemorating the Battle of Naseby.
{4} A 1823 memorial to the Battle of Naseby, built on an old windmill mound over a mile from the battlefield.
{5} The obelisk was erected in 1823 to commemorate The Battle of Naseby, but is not standing on the battlefield site.
{7} Architectural survey looks at the history and architectural importance of the obelisk. Extensive photographs looking at its history and condition.Includes recommendations for future presentation of the structure to the public.
{11} The Ferguson monument to the Battle of Naseby. It was described by Thomas Carlyle, Cromwell's biographer, as a "blockhead of a monument". Photo.
