Summary

The monument comprises an ornate stone column set within a grassed enclosure defined by a fence.The monument is of oolitic limestone, possibly Weldon stone, standing on a York stone base. The four main sections of the monument comprise of the octagonal steps, a panelled pedestal, a pilastered column with cornice and ball finial. The monument was designed by John Alfred Gotch and was erected in 1936.

Full Description

{1} Monument. C.1936. By J.A. Gotch. Limestone ashlar. Octagonal ribbed shaft surmounted by ball finial on octagonal panelled plinth. Inscription on front of plinth. "Battle of Naseby, 14 June 1645. From near this site Oliver Cromwell had the Cavalry charge which decided the issue of the battle and ultimately that of the great Civil War". On reverse of plinth, "This memorial was accepted on behalf of the county by the Chairman of the County Council 18 May 1936. Partially illegible.

{3} Stone Monument commemorating Battle of Naseby. Erected by C.H. Reich on 28/05/1936 to replace obelisk erected in 1823 some way from the battlefield.

{4} An architectural survey includes description, history, photographs etc. of the monument.

{5} Erected in 1936 by Mr C.H. Reich at the spot which he thought marked the start of the cavalry charge of Oliver Cromwell. In fact it stands at the right hand flank of the Parliamentary infantry.
