Building record 4369/1/1 - Church of St. Mary & All Saints, Holcot

Church built in the 13th century, with 14th century additions, restored in the 19th century. Built of squared coursed lias with ashlar dressings and lead and slate roofs. The church consists of an aisled nave, chancel and west tower.

{1} Church. C13, C14 with C19 restoration. Squared coursed lias with ashlar dressings. Lead and slate roofs. Aisled nave, chancel and west tower. Chancel, south elevation of 2-window range of 3-light square-headed windows. East window, 3-lights C19 with rounded tracery. North elevation of chancel has C19 vestry and organ chamber. Gabled roof with ashlar parapets. South aisle of 2-window range with porch between. Window to left of porch is C19. 2-light square-headed window, window to right is C14 three-light square-headed. Similar east window. Lean-to roof has castellated ashlar parapets. Gabled porch has triple chamfered arch and double stepped south door arch. Ashlar parapets and finial. Roof beam of porch is dated RH/1671/I.K. I.B. North aisle of 2-window range of one 3-light window with reticulated tracery and one 2-light with Y-tracery. Blocked door with double chamfered arch between windows. 2-light west window with Y-tracery. South nave clerestory of 4-window range of 2-light square headed windows. Shallow pitched roof with castellated ashlar parapets. North nave clerestory similar. West tower of 3 stages with flat buttresses to first and second stage. 2-light window in first stage and 2-light decorated bell chamber openings with transoms to each face of third stage. Castellated ashlar parapets with gargoyles at corners. Interior: Chancel has C19 double chamfered arch to vestry and organ chamber. Nave of 3-bays has decorated arcade of double chamfered arches with short piers of clustered shafts. Similar double chamfered chancel arch. Tall double chamfered tower arch. 3-light window opening at end of north aisle has reticulated tracery and is open to the vestry beyond. Chancel roof is C19, plain plastered panels. Nave roof is shallow C19. Stained glass to all chancel windows, all south aisle windows and bellfry window. Wall paintings, probably C14: at the west end of the south aisle probably representing the Ascension, Pentecost, Coronation of the Virgin and the Incredulity of St. Thomas. Near the south door, the resurrection. In the north aisle St. Thomas Becket and St. Catherine before the Emperor. Saints in window splays of north aisle with scroll decoration to the arches. All are very faded, the reputed descent of the Holy Ghost has disappeared. Monuments: Left of altar, Rev. Edward Halles died 1715 and family. Marble tablet with broken scroll pediment over. Right of altar similar plain tablet to other members of Halles family probably errected after 1724. Frances Maria Montgomery died 1794 plain oval tablet to right of altar. 4 mid C19 oval tablets to left of altar commemorate Montgomery family. Plain
tablet to B. Drage 1797 south aisle. Hatchment AR/1711. Font dated 1889 may incorporate medieval bowl.
