Summary

East Haddon Hall was built around 1780-1 by John Johnson for the Sawbridge family. The three storey building was built of limestone ashlar with a lead and slate roof. The east front of the hall was remodelled in the 20th century with the removal of the 19th century domestic wing. The house is set in gardens laid out by Gertrude Jekyll and Lutyens in 1897, of which only fragments remain. In the 1990s it was used as a girls' school.

Full Description

{1} Country house. C.1780-1, for Sawbridge family. By John Johnson of Leicester, builder: John Wagstaff. Limestone ashlar with lead and slate roof. Double pile plan. 3 storeys; south front: 5-window range symmetrical with central entrance having C19 porch. Tripartite sash above entrance with a blank lunette above decorated with thin garlands. Similar panel decoration between first- and second-floor windows. Other windows are sashes with glazing bars, reducing at second floor. Rusticated ground floor. Central pediment at parapet level. Hipped roof not visible. West and north fronts similar of 4- and 5-window range respectively, without central pediment, French doors at ground floor on north elevation. East front modified C20 by removal of C19 domestic wing. Interior: Double elliptical central staircase with wrought iron balustrade and plasterwork panelling to walls. Entrance hall has Rococo plasterwork ceiling with similar decoration over fireplace alcove. Dining room on north front has Adam style ceiling with similar decoration to walls and doorcases. The house is set in gardens laid out by Gertrude Jekyll and Lutyens 1897, of which only fragments remain. (q.v. Sundial approx 15m west of East Haddon Hall.) {5} [Former list description] I East Haddon Hall (Girls' School)
Mid C.18, in the Adam style. A rectangular 3-storey house of limestone. Main front, South, 5 windows, 2:1:2, central breakforward with dentilled pediment. Rusticated ground floor. A continuous cornice links the cills of the first floor windows; the cills of the second floor windows are similarly linked. The house is topped by a dentilled cornice and a shallow parapet. Shallow pitched hipped roof. All windows are sash in plain reveals. The central window to the first floor on the south front is a 3-light sash, divided by 2 Ionic columns and is set in a semi-circular headed recess. In the semi-circle of the recess above this window there is a swag. Above all the other windows of the first floor the swag is on a rectangular panel which has a finely moulded surround. A later porch encloses the entrance:- semi-circular headed doorway with moulded archivolt and keystone, flanked by 2 half-columns and corner pilasters; a simple entablature with a pulvinated frieze and segmental pediment with swag on the tympanum. There is a late 2-storey wing adjoining on the East (not included). Interior:- good. Fine stone staircase with simple wrought iron balusters. Good plaster-work and panelling.
