Summary

Late 18th century gates and lodge to Cottesbrooke Hall. One of a pair with the East Lodge. The lodges are of one storey, square in plan set on either side of a cental pair of gates.

Full Description

{1} Lodge with gates and gatepier. Late C18. Architect Robert Mitchell. Limestone ashlar. Lodge originally one-unit plan. Single storey. Central sash window with glazing bars has balustrade below and pediment over; all set in shallow arched recess. Door facing drive has 6 fielded panels with moulded stone architraves set in similar shallow arch with shields of arms in tympanums. Frieze cornice, panelled and balustraded parapet with large oval urns over centre. Wrought iron gate to right hanging from rusticated pier with moulded cornice and oval patrae flanked by Roman Doric 2-column open screen with wrought iron panels and hand gates surmounted by entablature with triglyph freize with sphinx over linking to flanking lodge. The lodge, gates and gatepiers form a pair with the east lodge. They were moved to their present position in 1938 from the Leicester Road. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.163).

{4} 2 matching lodges built in 1770-80, probably by Robert Mitchell, during the alterations for Sir William Langham. Oringinally built at the former entrance to the south of the park but dismantled and moved to their present position after 1937.

{6} West and East Lodges (listed with gates grade II) at its end, single-storey and originally with a one-unit plan, were designed c 1780 by Robert Mitchell. They were moved here in 1938 from the entrance on the Leicester Road.

Late C.18. Architect Robert Mitchell. Single storey state entrance of seven symmetrical bays in ashlar. Centre consists of fine pair of enriched cast iron gates hanging from pair of rusticated piers with friezes with oval patrae and cornices flanked by Roman Doric 2-column open screens with cast iron panels and pedestrian gates surmounted by entablature with triglyph frieze ox-skull metopes and mutules. Female sphinxes over. One storey projecting square balustraded lodges with shallow round arched treatment enclosing pedimented sash windows to front with balustraded aprons, and 6-fielded panel doors to face drive with architraves fluted friezes and cornices and with shields of arms in tympanums of arches with crests and swags. Enriched archivolt band. Frieze, cornice, panelled and balustraded parapet, large oval urn over to centre. Set back in line with gates on the other sides of the lodges are plain walls with round arched doorways, plain parapets with bands.
