Full Description

{1} Wall c.1776 for Earl of Strafford and Wentworth. Coursed ironstone and lias rubble. Carriage arch to right (rebuilt). Flanked by crenellated wall with buttresses. Cartsheds and 2-storey bothey attached to rear. Included for group value.

{5} The large crenellate wall on the west side has a clear practical use to shelter the original yard. The range of buildings attached to the wall comprises: to the north a modern open fronted timber framed lean-to with asbestos cement sheeting; further south a building of similar construction but originally built as an enclosed garage with a steeper pitch roof.

{6} 650m E of Grotto Spinney & on N side of valley is farm constructed in 1776 & named in commemoration of the Battle of Bunker's Hill of 1775; General Sir William Howe who led the British lines at the battle was the 2nd Earl's brother in law; carriage arch flanked by crenellated wall with buttresses leads into the farmyard
