Summary

Adjoining houses, the right-hand one now a shop, Nos 4 and 5 Market Square. Late 16th or early 17th century, refronted in the early 18th century. Ashlar and stucco with a tile roof.

Full Description

{1} House, now two dwellings. Late C16th or early C17th. Front rebuilt early C18th. No.5 ironstone ashlar, No.4 stucco. Machine tile roof throughout. Large stone ridge stack. 2-unit plan altogether. 2 storeys plus attic. 2-window range. 2 entrances to right, entrance on left under a coved door hood. Panelled/glazed doors. Wood door frames. Sash window with 4 large panes to right. 2 sashes with margin lights and moulded keyblock stone surrounds to left. 2 sashes to first floor have glazing bars. Flat band to first floor on left. Interior of No.5 reported as having original fluted panelling, stone first floor chimney piece and newel staircase with carved balusters. C18 ground floor cupboard and chimney-piece. Interior not inspected.

{3} House, now divided. Late C16th origins with mid/late C17th alterations and with front rebuilt early C18. C19th and C20th alterations and refurbishment. No.5 ironstone ashlar with 1st floor band. No.4 stucco with projecting ground floor on right, coved doorhood on left. Tiled roof with 2 gabled dormers. Brick central ridge stack with stone base to front. 2 storeys and attics, 2 flush sash windows with glazing bars to 1st floor. No.5 has marginal glazing bars to 2 ground floor sash windows in architrave surrounds with keystones. Shop window to No.4.
Interior of No.5 has C17th/C18th fluted dado panelling reset probably C19th/C20th to ground floor room. This room also has a C18th corner cupboard and chimney piece with C18th panelling to sides and over and C18th doors to sides. Earlier bressumer behind. Small mid/late C17th open well staircase with fine carved and moulded balusters. Roof in part original but with alterations, and altered C18th rear wing.

{2} Late 16th or early 17th with front rebuilt in the early 18th century. 2 storeys and attics.
