Full Description

{1} School, now house. C18 with later alterations. Red brick with glazed headers laid to Flemish bond. Steeply pitched renewed and old tile roof. Brick ridge and end stacks. 4-unit plan. 3 storeys. 5-window range. 2 entrances. Central main entrance has recessed 4-panelled door, overlight and doorcase. 2 sash windows to left have glazing bars and keyblock and brick heads. C20 entrance and window to right. 5 sash windows to first and second floors having glazing bars and keyblock and brick heads. Moulded cornice. Plaque at first floor level on left records residence here of Joseph Priestly, scientist as a student of Doddridge's Academy 1752-5. Interior not inspected.

{2}C18, altered. Red stretchers, pink headers, tiled roof. 3 storeys, stone and stucco plinth. 5 sash windows with glazing bars, reveals, flat arches, keystones. Central early C19 doorway has 4 panel door, oblong fanlight, slim reeded Doric pilasters, frieze, cornice hood. Restaurant modern front on right, Plaque at 1st floor level on left records residence here as student of Doddridge's Academy, 1752-5, of Joseph Priestley, scientist.

{3} Dissenting Academy moved from Northampton to Daventry in 1752. A building was erected in Sheaf Street adjoining the Ministers House. In 1789 the institution transferred back to Northampton until it moved to Hertfordshire in 1798. The building is still standing and is of three storey construction with red and blue brick patterning. A plaque on the structure reads 'Doddridge Academy. Joseph Priestly LLD FRS Theologian and Man of Science was a student here 1752-56'. The building is listed and is currently used as offices.
