Full Description

{1} Hotel. Early C17, refronted early to mid C19. Stucco. Hipped slate roof. Brick ridge stacks. Courtyard plan. 2 storey plus attic. 6-window range. Wide entrance to left has panelled double doors under wood lintel. Entrance to right has semi-circular arched stone surrounds. Tripartite door. Overlight. 6 sash windows to first floor, one blocked. Glazing bars and wood frames. 7 similar windows to attic. Rusticated painted long and short stone quoins. Painted plinth. Moulded wood eaves cornice. 4-win :> ord Street. Interior reported as having a good C17 staircase. Included partly for historical interest.

{3} Early C17, refronted early to mid C19. Stucco road front, hipped Welsh slated roof. 3 storeys, 7 sash windows in reveals. Tall plinth, rusticated quoins. Arched doorway wide carriage entrance. Tiled roofed back wings, central courtyard. Interior includes rooms (said to retain original panelling) used by Charles I before battle of Naseby. Painted canvas ornament reputed to survive in one room. Good C17 staircase. Included partly for historical interest.

Wheatsheaf Hotel (grade 2* listed building) on the corner of Sheaf Street / New Street was a prestigious coaching inn in the town. Original building of 17th century construction. Some of the rooms used by Charles I prior to Battle of Naseby. The building has been rendered and is now used as a nursing home. Film 7 photo 17-23.
