Full Description
{1} Farmhouse, now public house. Probably early C18 with datestones S/RM/1756 and V/68/R; the latter records alterations of 1868 for William Mackworth-Dolben. Regular coursed ironstone with C20 plain tile roof. Originally probably 3-unit plan. 2 storeys. 3-window range of 2- and 3-light C19 stone mullion windows, some with leaded lights. Central C20 door has C19 moulded stone surround with 4-centred head. Small projecting gable with finial to left of entrance and small gables over other first floor windows. 2-window range to right has first floor casements with wood lintels and a lower eaves line. Ashlar gable parapets and kneelers with brick stack at ridge and stone stack at end. Inscription "Elm Grange" on left gable has 1868 datestone above. Initials W.H. and M.D. in other gables. Central C18 wing to rear. C18 barns attached to either side of rear elevation, that abutting Wellingborough Road has datestone 1756. Interior has some chamfered beams and open fireplace.
{3} Elm Grange was a farm complex on the corner of Ivy Lane and Wellingborough Road to the south western end of the town. The main building is constructed of good quality stone and the name of the farm is inscribed in stone on the side of the structure. Now converted to Mulso Arms Public House. Film 5, photo 2, 4
The original Mulso Arms was situated on the corner of High Street and Affleck Bridge was formerly called the Shoe and Clog, now demolished.
{4} Elm Grange comprises a former farmhouse and associated buildings converted into a public house in the early 20th century. The farmhouse has been extensively remodelled both inside and out and contains no original features. The adjoining barns have similarly changed though two contain remains of cattle troughs. Other farm buildings have been demolished. In the nineteenth century the farmhouse was re-fronted in a mock Elizabethan/ Jacobean style by the Mackworth-Dolben family. All the buildings have been re-roofed. A number of brick and stone additions were made to the group during its life as a public house.
The first reference to the Elm Grange Farm is in 1739 when the owner/ tenant is listed as William Lamb and the buildings described as "1 new house and yard" which suggests that it may date from that year. The building became the Mulso Arms public house in about 1926, which finally closed in 2001.
