Summary
Formerly Wellingborough Union Workhouse (or Wellingborough Union Poor Law Institution). Wellingborough Union Workhouse was built between 1836 and 1837 to designs by James Clephan. The building has a cruciform plan with a three storey octagonal hub. It is faced in orange-red bricks with slate roofs.

Full Description
{1} Shown on O.S. map as Park Hospital. Workhouse, now hospital. C.1835. Brick with slate roof. Cross-shape plan. 2 and 3 storeys. Central octagon of 3 storeys and one-window range to alternate faces, some with arch heads. Conical roof with central stack. Radiating wings originally 2 storeys. 5-window range, some retaining arch head windows with cast-iron glazing bars. Gabled roof. Each wing terminates in square block of 3 storeys. 3-window range of similar style with pyramid roofs. Raised brick es to all elevations at springing of window arches. West block has weather vane. Some C19 and C20 alterations to windows. Various late C19 buildings attached are not of special architectural interest.
{2} Former workhouse, built c.1835. Enlarged when became hospital in the late 19th century. Various late 19th century buildings-Enquiries and administration building and attached stores and ancilliary accommodation are attached to the former workhouse. These are not viewed as "special architectual interest". Cross-shape plan. 2 and 3 storeys.
{5} Union Workhouse, London Road. Union Workhouse is located to the south of the town and is capable of accomodating 250 people. The building was erected in 1837 and a detached infirmary was added in 1869.The Union includes 27 parishes and is over 84 square miles. The workhouse building is still in existence and is in the process of being converted to luxury houses and flats. Additional buildings have been added to the basic cross structure. The workhouse is the same layout and design as that at Ampthill, Bedfordshire. Local knowledge informs that the building was under utilised for many years. The infirmary associated with the workhouse has now been incorporated into Isebrook hospital.(Film 14 photos 5-13,15-17,19-24 - workhouse; photos 14,18 - infirmary).
