{5} This stone farm outbuilding was probably constructed in the later 18th century, as one of two, side by side. Both exhibit similar gauged stone lintels above doors and windows. The building was redesigned during the second half of the 19th century or possibly later, with the insertion of interior brick walls to create two double stables and a tack room, all facing west, and of which little detail survives. On the far side was created a single carriage-house facing east. The major reordering also doubled the height of the building which was given a first floor, probably to create groom’s accommodation at the north end and a hayloft access at the south end. Subsequently the plot boundary wall was built up against the end of the reordered building and the southern angle then filled with a small greenhouse or planting house. These phases may have taken place after the hayloft (and possibly the stable also) went out of use.
