Full Description

{1} There was no hospital or other monastic establishment in Oundle because the manor was owned by the Abbot of Peterborough and the wealth of the manor was exploited to maintain and develop the Abbey. Though there was a Spittle Plot on the west side of the town, recorded first in 1400, immediately to the west of Warren Bridge, there is no reason to believe that there was a hospital in the town. It is possible that this ground was part of the land of the Knights Hospitallers which was held in 1558-9 by Thomas Tresham.
