Full Description
{1}Limited evidence for the defences has been recovered in excavations on the north west side of the town by Alexander on the Sponne School site, published by Brown.
{2}Refortification during the Civil War 1643-4, evidence recovered at the Sponne School site was a narrow flat bottomed ditch 1.8m x 5.6m wide cut through an earlier Roman ditch. The ditch contained medieval pottery. The ditch was filled and the zone between and the crest of the town bank was covered with a cascade of limestone blocks, with pieces of sandstone, this formed a solid layer 1.5m thick.
