Full Description
{1} The Attic base is of a size to support a column of 625mm in diameter, the whole monolithic piece having a straight cut on a chord of 440mm at the column base (883mm on the torus). The base has been formed from a piece of oolitic limestone, the type found in Ketton, Rutland, but with a pink tinge. On the top face is a lewis hole 100mm deep measuring 70x22mm undercut in the usual wat at the ends. Its origin and how long it has lain in the garden is unknown.
(The article explores the possible origins of the column base, and the form of building its column may have supported).
