Summary
Early Saxon cemeteryoccupying part of a former Roman enclosure was partially revealed by excavation in 1999. Nine inhumations were found, aligned north-south and east-west, and a range of grave goods was found, including bone combs, glass beads, several iron knives, and a possible amulet which was made of bone. Full Description
{1} Part of a early middle Saxon cemetery dating somewhere between the 5th to 7th centuries. Although the presence of the early/middle Saxon cemetery indicated activity in the area, there was no direct evidence for settlement.
This phase of activity comprised ten inhumations (a discrete group of nine and an isolated burial 25m to the south) in the northern part of the excavation and possibly extending beneath the houses and gardens of an earlier housing development in Siddons Close. Of the nine burials, six were generally aligned north to south and three east to west. Some of the graves contained grave goods, including bone combs, glass beads, a large polychrome melon bead, a bone amulet and iron knives. The cemetery has been provisionally dated to the 5th to 7th centuries.
