Monument record 9580/0/1 - Iron Age Pit Alignment, south-west of New Manor farm

Part of a pit alignment, comprising two pits, was identified during trial trench excavation. It was buried beneath a thick layer of colluvium

{1} The pit alignment was encountered beneath 1.2m of colluvium. One of the pits encountered was sub-rectangular in shape, and about 0.85m deep. The primary fill of the pit consisted of a sandy silt with frequent ironstone fragments, while the upper fills contained very little ironstone and may represent a final slow silting episode. There were no indications that the pit had once held a post, although had the post been withdrawn and the pit infilled again it would not necessarily have left any trace of its presence. A further pit in the alignment was visible at the eastern edge of the trench and was situated c0.7m from the excavated pit.

A shallow gully was located adjacent to one of the pits in the alignment, running at a slight angle to it. It was without finds and may not be related to the pit alignment.
