Full Description

{2} The mound is large, 20m in diameter and 1.5m high, with a slight depression in the flat top and traces of a ditch 0.2m deep around it, except on the east where the remains of a ramp leading on to the summit survive. The mound is respected by the adjacent ridge-and-furrow. Late medieval and 18th-century pottery together with a large number of iron nails has been found in a worn area on the east side. Finds sent to Northampton Museum

A water-filled pit to the east, probably the source of material for the mound, was largely filled in some years ago but slight traces of it remain. The local name for the site is Mill Moot.

{4} The mount is known as MILL MOOT. There is no known local tradition of a windmill on it. About two years ago, the water-filled pit on the east of the mound was filled in partly with material taken
from the east side of the mound. Many potsherds were found, including a rivetted, repaired vessel and hundreds of iron-nails. Nothing was kept. No evidence of any structure was seen.

{5} [Area centred: SP 7310 8375] A tumulus, c. 1/4 mile south of LITTLE OXENDON, and to the east of the road to Little Oxendon, O.S. 6" SP 78 SW has been reported as being a bell barrow.

{6} [SP 7308 8395] Mound visible as relief-marking.

{7} A large mill-mound, 20.0m in average diameter and 1.5 m. high. There is a depression on the top and traces of a slight ditch on all but the east side. The mound is under grass at the edge of old rig-and-furrow fields. The broken surface of the filled-in pit on the east can still seen and it was presumably the quarry for the material forming the mound.
The east side of the mound is mutilated with exposed soil. About twenty potsherds of late Md. to 18th c. date were found and about the same number of iron-nails, the latter presumably from the wooden weather-boarding of the former mill. Finds sent to Northampton Museum.

{8} 'B' No change. Surveyed at 1/2500.
