Full Description

{1}Magnetometer survey and trial excavation confirmed presence of late Iron Age / Roman enclosure previously identified by cropmark and fieldwalking. The geophysical survey identified linear anomalies, probably ditches, which formed three sides of a rectangular enclosure some 46m wide; no evidence for ditch to form fourth side of the enclosure.A ditch of 800mm wide and 600mm deep was identified in trench cutting through area of enclosure, this contained Roman pottery. Features within the enclosure including 4 pits and 3 gullies contained Iron Age and Romano-British pottery. No evidence for north-east boundary ditch. Truncated remains of two parallel ditches found within further trench - contained single sherds of Iron Age and Roman pottery respectively.

{2}Stage three - metal detecting and trial excavation confirmed presence of Iron Age and Roman remains largly truncated and partially destroyed by 19th century quarrying.

{4} Cropmark of a possible enclosure; NCCAP:SP8869/1-5.
