Summary

A small rectangular earthwork, interpreted as a possible medieval moat, was identified from aerial photographs, but field inspection identified a series of small quarry pits. Lidar imagery does not show any sign of a rectangular earthwork, but does show the probable quarrying.

Full Description

{1} Site C. A small rectangular earthwork of unknown date has been reported by aerial observation. It lies within a field reputed to be the site of a Civil War skirmish [ref Mon 5698/1].
The enclosure was not located on the ground, where instead a linear disturbance runs throughout the length of the field for c.250m both parallel to and c.8m from the eastern boundary. It consists of a linear series of large sub-circular hollows ranging in size from 3m-20m in diameter and up to 2.74m deep, set into the hill slope. The pits appear to have been truncated to the north-east by the present A422 road. The surviving earthworks are clearly the remains of quarries which have been dug into the slope to extract the natural limestone.
Field 30 was also subject to geophysical survey, but had a very low magnetic response and no significant anomalies were associated with the extant earthworks.
