Full Description
{2} A deposit of demolition material consisting of fragments of limestone, brick and other 19th century midden waste was observed lining the base of the hollow way. The rubble had a uniform depth which is indicative of a purposeful upgrade rather than intermittent resurfacing. No evidence for an early medieval hollow way was recovered. However, the lack of evidence doesn't completely negate the interpretation of this feature as medieval as, if an earlier compacted earth or mettled surface did exist, it was certainly destroyed during the feature's upgrade in the 19th century.
