Full Description
{1} The surviving earthworks in the old parkland east and south of the hall complement the documented history, but also present problems of interpretation because the remains are partly overlaid by later features connected with the landscaping of the area. Some of the village earthworks were even incorporated into the scheme of landscaping.
Immediately east of the site of the hall and north of the lake, where the 1622 map shows the road, the lane to the pond and a number of houses, little remains on the surface (‘a’ on the earthwork plan). There are only some low scarps and banks and other indeterminate earthworks, with well marked ridge and furrow to their north. To the north-west there is a large L-shaped scarp which still stands 1.5m high. The south side of this may mark the edge of the old road at this point. The other earthworks are either old closes not shown on the 1622 map, or are the result of destruction of the village in the early C18th.
