Full Description

{2} Trial trench excavation was undertaken in 2019 at The Old Rectory. The earthwork bank was in an area of other upstanding earthworks. This bank was aligned east to west at the base of the natural slope. It was observed for c40m, was 5m wide 0.30m high, had a rounded top and gradual sloping sides. Where the trench cut across the bank there were no definable separate layers that corresponded with it, the subsoil and topsoil were instead slightly thicker at this location. This earthwork bank together with other earthworks in the deer park, are likely to be the result of landscaping perhaps in part to mitigate against the seasonal flooding or to further divide the plot of land.
