Abstract/Summary

MOLA was commissioned to undertake an archaeological trial trench evaluation at The Old Rectory, Preston Capes, Northamptonshire (NGR 457488 254887). Six trenches were excavated in the proposed area of two new ponds. Trenches 2 to 6, in the area of the proposed large pond to the north, were excavated on level ground, but Trench 1, in the area of the small pond to the south, was excavated east-west down a steep hill slope. None of the trenches excavated revealed any archaeological remains except Trench 1, in the area of the small pond, which contained the remains of a postmedieval pit. Trench 6 was positioned across an earthwork bank that likely formed part of post-medieval landscaping; there were no other deposits other than subsoil and topsoil in this area.
