Full Description
{2} A magnetometer survey was undertaken at Whilton Lodge, the site of Bannaventa Roman town. The most obvious and conspicuous archaeological feature identified during the geophysical survey was a series of boundary ditches forming the north-eastern corner of the defensive circuit which had surrounded the late Roman posting station. The anomalies suggest a circuit of two ditches with an internal bank which presumably was faced by a stone wall noted elsewhere on the defensive circuit. Immediately south of the eastern extent of these ditches a road crosses these ditches, exiting by a possible postern gate through the defensive wall.
Possible internal features were also identified.
